Victory At Mr Kuala Lumpur 2013
Whoever said that the first victory is the sweetest is totally right. Especially when you didn’t expect it at all even though you trained and dieted strictly for it. And yeah, that’s kinda ironic. Who is willing to put 100% of their effort into a contest which they don’t expect to win? Well, maybe that actually helped me win the title of Mr Kuala Lumpur 2013 Champ of Champs (Above 70kg). I was calm going into the contest. I told myself, “No matter what happens, I’ll accept the outcome and learn from it. And I’m still going to have an awesome food trip on Monday!” Because of this mindset, I actually had great sleep the night before the event! Heck, I actually slept DURING the event, when the earlier categories were being contended.
This year, I learnt from my mistakes I made during my Mr Kuala Lumpur 2012. The biggest mistake I made then was of course, panicking and worrying too much. Other than that, I made sure I came into the contest with full muscles and an empty belly, not the other way around. Last year, even though I had awesome conditioning, I had a huge belly filled with food I ate when I was carbing up. But not this year. 🙂
During my off season after Mr KL 2012, I also took the effort to work on my weak points. I listened to all the criticism given to me. “Your legs were defined but thin” “Your abs weren’t sharp” “Your biceps could use more peak”. And guess what? Those parts don’t seem like my weak points anymore. In fact, my legs were one of my strongest parts! As for abs, it has improved but still needs more work to do. Well, everything takes time.
Going into this contest, I must say I was pretty confident that I will place in the top 3 and I had a great chance to win my category, which is the men’s senior light middleweight category. But of course, it wasn’t a guarantee so I must still flex hard and look my best on stage.
After I was announced the light middleweight winner, I felt so relieved. Finally, my first win! I had to stay back for the overall winner showdown but I didn’t expect much from it. I was already glad to be able to place 1st in my category and also to represent Kuala Lumpur at Mr Malaysia which will be held on 15th to 16th June at Penang.
During the announcement of the overall winner for the above-70kg category, I didn’t feel the same way as I did during the light middleweight prize giving ceremony. Unlike that occasion, I didn’t expect myself to win, honestly. Just look at the winner of the welterweight category, competitor #99. He’s SHREDDED!! And the winner of the middleweight category, competitor #113 is HUGE!! All I can think of was, “Alright. Alright. Let’s make this quick please. I can’t wait to have my chocolate cake!!”. Well, want to see my reaction when they announced me the overall winner? Check out the video below. And yea, that girl screaming is my baby girl Amanda. 🙂
Thank you to all who came to support me at Mr KL. Thank you to Faisal and Zuhair for helping me with my tan. Thanks Bryan for helping me take some awesome videos of the event. And thanks to everyone else for your support whether it’s on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram or in person.
And so, finally, after staying at Wisma OCM from 10am all the way until 8pm, it’s time to finally wash off the tan and have some awesome dinner!!
Mmm… I was totally in heaven! Completely satisfied all my cravings. 😀 However, I’m now back on a diet, having to prepare for Mr Malaysia and also Mr Singapore. Hopefully, I will surprise myself again during those two events, in a good way of course. 😉
